Video games have given us plenty of memorable quotes over the years. Several of which I use in day to day conversation because I’m cool like that. These quotes can be memorable due to how awful they are, whether that’s a result of bad translation or just bad writing. But more often than not they’re memorable because of excellent writing and what they mean in the world that has been built around them. So I thought I would take a look at some of my favourite quotes from the games I’ve played throughout the years and share them. OBVIOUS SPOILERS!
BioShock Franchise ~ Of course a game that feature the rise and fall of utopian societies that strove to achieve perfection would have some great quotes.Props to Ken Levine and the fine folks of the lateIrrational Studios on a beautifully written game.
“Would you kindly?” – Frank Fontaine, BioShock
“I had you built! I sent you top-side! I called you back, showed you what you was, what you was capable of! Even that life you thought you had? That was something I dreamed of and had tatooed inside you head.” – Frank Fontaine, BioShock
Is man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?” – Andrew Ryan, BioShock
“A man chooses. A slave obeys.” – Andrew Ryan, BioShock
Elizabeth: “Are you afraid of God, Mr.Dewitt?”
Joel: “No… but I’m afraid of you.” – BioShock Infinite
The Last of Us ~ Hailed as one of the greatest games of the last generation and quite possibly of all time, The Last of Us is so extraordinary in no small part to its dialogue. Characters in The Last of Us feel so real and are so compelling because of how well written they are. The relationship between Joel and Ellie is one of the greatest relationships between two characters ever performed in a video game. Voice actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson do a remarkable job of bringing writer Neil Druckman’s script to life. It’s exceptional.
Ellie: That girl is so skinny… I thought you had plenty of food in your time.
Joel: We did. Some just chose not to eat it.
Ellie: Why the hell not?
Joel: For looks.
Ellie: Pffft, that’s stupid.
Joel: I struggled for a long time with survivin’. And you- No matter what, you keep finding something to fight for. Now, I know that’s not what you want to hear right now, but it’s…
Ellie: Swear to me. Swear to me that everything you said about the fireflies is true.
Joel: I Swear.
Ellie: [after a long pause] Okay.
“Once upon a time, I had somebody that I cared about… It was a partner. Somebody I had to look after. And in this world, that sort of shit’s good for one thing: Gettin’ you killed. So you know what I did? I wizened the fuck up, and realized it’s got to be just me out there.” – Bill
“You know, as bad as those things are, at least they’re predictable. It’s the normal people that scare me.” -Bill
Portal Games: When I think about games that make me laugh out loud the first games I think about are the Portal games. They’re something else. Their own level of writing. The jokes in Portal are very clever and treat you like an intelligent person. GLaDOS, Wheatley and Cave Johnson all contribute hilarity, sarcasm, sass and laughs to these wonderful games.
“This is your fault. I’m going to kill you. And all the cake is gone. You don’t even care, do you?” -GLaDOS, Portal
“Well, you found me. Congratulations. Was it worth it? Because despite your violent behavior, the only thing you’ve managed to break so far… is my heart. Maybe you could settle for that, and we’ll just call it a day. I guess we both know that isn’t going to happen.” – GLaDOS, Portal
“The Enrichment Center is required to remind you that the Weighted Companion Cube cannot talk. In the event that it does talk The Enrichment Centre asks you to ignore its advice.” – GLaDOS, Portal
“Oh. Hi. So. How are you holding up? BECAUSE I’M A POTATO.” – GLaDOS, Portal 2
“Those of you who volunteered to be injected with praying mantis DNA, I’ve got some good news and some bad news. Bad news is we’re postponing those tests indefinitely. Good news is we’ve got a much better test for you: fighting an army of mantis men. Pick up a rifle and follow the yellow line. You’ll know when the test starts.” – Cave Johnson, Portal 2
“All right, I’ve been thinking, when life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back! Get Mad! I don’t want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man whose gonna burn your house down – with the lemons! I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that’ll burn your house down!” – Cave Johnson, Portal 2
“I need a weapon.” – Master Chief, Halo 3
Cortana: “What if you miss?”
Chief: “I won’t.” – Halo 2
“It’s time to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and I’m all out of gum.” – Duke Nukem, Duke Nukem 3D
“Requiescat in Pace.” Ezio Auditore, ACII
“HiiiiiiiYAH!” – Link, everything
“Hey! Listen!” – Navi, Ocarina of Time
“I AM THE GOD OF WAR!” – Kratos, God of War
“I’m going to touch EVERYTHING!” – Delsin, inFAMOUS Second Son
“Still. Not. BITTEN!” – Clementine, TWD Season 2
And that’s it! Those are just a few of my favourite quotes from a few of my favourite game. Have any others I might have overlooked? Please leave them in comments below!
“Why not take a break?” BECAUSE I DON’T WANT TO!
